The discipline is not "ask shoppers what they like" - it is a staged sequence of tests, each answering one decision question, each cheaper than the mistake it prevents.

Match the research stage to the decision at hand:

1. Stage 1: concept and positioning (before design) Test the packaging concept, not the artwork: category cues, size cues, price perception.
