The Food Packaging Design Brief: From Kickoff to Dieline in Six Steps
Most packaging projects do not fail in the design phase; they fail in the brief. The brief is where the budget, the shelf context, the compliance constraints, and the success metrics get set - and where vague objectives become expensive surprises. A disciplined brief-to-dieline process is the difference between a design that ships and a design that stalls.
The Scenario: The Brief That Said "Premium"
A brand brief says: "make it premium." Three design agencies produce three different things: one adds foil, one adds black, one adds white space. The client rejects all three and the project burns four months. The next brief says: "premium means a $14 price-point shelf context, competitor X and Y in the fixture, matte finish with spot gloss on the logo, and a top-2-box purchase intent of 35% in shelf testing." 2. Step 2 - Lock the technical constraints Before any design: the packaging format and machinery (does it run on the existing line?), the substrate, the print process and color standard (e.g., G7 or ISO 12647), the compliance requirements (food contact, labeling), and the minimum order quantities. Constraint changes after design start are the most expensive changes of all.
3. Step 3 - Research the shelf context Photograph the actual fixture, measure the planogram space, and note the visual patterns of the category (color families, layout norms). Break the norms deliberately later - but know them first.
4. Step 4 - Design in concepts, not directions Develop 2-3 genuinely different concepts (not 2-3 colorways of one idea) that map to different brand strategies; test them against the metrics from Step 1, not against stakeholder taste.
5. Step 5 - Refine through structural and prepress checks Verify the design on the real structure (dieline, folding, and seal geometry), check it against the printer’s capabilities (ink coverage, foil areas, bleeds), and fix issues in the design stage, where they cost hours, not tooling changes.
6. Step 6 - Hand off production-ready files Deliver a complete package: final dielines, color-managed print files, proof approval records, and the compliance and specification sheet. A clean handoff is the difference between on-schedule launch and a stop-the-line correction.
