Pet food packaging has two customers: the pet that eats the food and the human who buys it. The human reads the shelf; the pet reads the smell. Both depend on the same engineering — a barrier that keeps fats from oxidizing, a seal that survives weeks of daily openings, and a brand face that earns the premium. Design the packaging around the fat, and everything else follows.
The Scenario: The Bag That Went Rancid at Week Three
A DTC pet food brand launched a kibble in a single-layer paper bag. Customers loved the food — until week three, when the fat oxidation made it smell stale. 2. Resealability: the zipper is a feature, not an add-on Most pet food is used over 2-6 weeks of daily openings. A zipper reclosure (or rigid reclosure for bulk) protects the food and the experience. Test zipper durability across 50+ cycles — a zipper that fails mid-bag is a product complaint.
3. Puncture resistance: protect the barrier Sharp kibble and bone-shaped treats puncture thin films, silently breaking the barrier. Use puncture-resistant film structures or add a protective layer where content contacts the film.
4. Moisture and aroma: the sensory contract Keep moisture in spec (below 10% for kibble) and hold aroma in the bag until opening — the first-smell moment sells the food to the pet and the human. Aroma-tight seals are part of the premium.
5. Sustainability: recyclable structures where possible Mono-material PE or PP structures with barrier coatings are recyclable in more programs than foil laminates. Balance barrier needs against recyclability, and state the disposal path on the bag.
