Tamper evidence is the packaging feature consumers notice only when it is missing. It is the band that snaps, the seal that must be broken, the button that stays popped. For food brands it is a legal obligation in many categories and a quiet trust signal in every category: the customer who has to break something to open the package is a customer who believes nobody got there first.
The Scenario: The Jar That Was Opened Before You
A brand ships a premium pasta sauce in a glass jar with a metal lug cap. In one retail batch, a customer returns a jar that was opened, sampled, and resealed. No band, no button: nobody could tell. Anchor compliance in the regulation that applies In the US, the FDA Tamper-Evident Packaging Regulation (21 CFR 211.132) requires a distinctive, hard-to-copy indicator for OTC products, and food brands follow the same logic voluntarily; the EU General Food Law (EC 178/2002) and national rules govern integrity. Specify the standard in the spec sheet, not just the artwork.
3. Keep opening force in the ergonomic band The breakaway band should snap at a torque that children cannot defeat but seniors can manage; consumer tests show 8-12 in-lb closure torque with a band that separates cleanly at first opening works for both groups. Test with the actual demographic, not the design team.
4. Verify the seal survives distribution Run a distribution simulation (ISTA 2A or ASTM D4169) with the sealed package; a band that cracks in transit fails its purpose. Also test cold-chain cycles, because shrink sleeves become brittle below -10 C and can split in refrigerated freight.
