What is molded pulp packaging?
Molded pulp packaging is made by pulping recycled paper fiber, mixing it with water, and vacuum-forming the slurry over a shaped mold, then drying it. The result is a rigid, protective shell used for trays, inserts, egg cartons, and protective packaging — a renewable alternative to plastic foam.
Is molded pulp packaging actually sustainable?
Yes, on the evidence. It's made from 100% recycled fiber, is itself recyclable in the paper stream (which the U.S. EPA puts at a 65.7% recycling rate), and home-composts within 90 days under BPI certification. Unlike plastic, it doesn't persist in the environment for centuries.
What products use molded pulp packaging?
Molded pulp protects electronics, glass bottles, cosmetics, eggs, and food — anywhere a product needs cushioning or a formed tray. It's also used for custom inserts in premium unboxing, replacing plastic trays and foam corners with a mono-material, compostable structure.
How does molded pulp compare to plastic foam for protection?
Molded pulp matches foam's cushioning for most applications at comparable cost, and it wins on end-of-life: it recycles and composts where foam does neither. Thick-wall pulp handles heavy items; thin-wall pulp handles lighter products. For electronics and glass, it's a proven drop-in replacement.
Is molded pulp packaging food-safe?
Yes, when manufactured for food contact. Food-grade molded pulp complies with FDA 21 CFR 176.260 and, in the EU, the framework regulation for food-contact materials. Certified products are also PFAS-free. Always request the supplier's food-contact compliance documentation.
