Can paper pouches really replace plastic pouches?

For a growing range of products, yes. Paper structures with thin functional coatings now run on standard pouch-filling lines and hold up well in transit. The honest limit is barrier: products that need very high protection from oxygen or moisture — such as oily snacks or products with long shelf-life demands — may still need plastic-based structures. Match the packaging to the product's real protection needs.

How does paper-based packaging achieve its barrier?

Paper alone lets moisture, oxygen, and grease pass through, so suppliers add a barrier layer or coating: a thin water-based or bio-based coating, a dispersion coating, or a fine plastic film laminated inside. The coating can be designed to keep the pack repulpable or compostable, which decides whether the pouch belongs in the paper stream, the compost stream, or neither. Can paper pouches be sealed the same way as plastic pouches?
